Is the soul immortal?
No. In the Bible, for example, we encounter the following statements:
The soul [Hebrew: nefesh] that is sinning, it shall die.
Ezekiel 18:4,20
For You, O LORD! have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my foot from stumbling.
Psalm 116:8; the NBG translation wrongly translated “soul” as “life”
God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and thus man became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7; SV
When man breathes out the breath of life again and returns to the ground, then he has become a dead soul. “Dead souls” is an expression that occurs a few times in the book of Leviticus (19:28, 21:1; unfortunately, this is not reflected in most translations). The idea of an immortal soul comes from Greek philosophy, not from Scripture.
