What Is the Lake of Fire?
The expression “the Lake of Fire” occurs 5 times, namely in the book of Revelation. The word “lake” is another word for a body of water. For example, the lake of Gennesaret (Luke 5:1). The first time “the lake of the fire” is mentioned is in Revelation 19:20. From the context and other texts, it appears that a battlefield is in view not far from the Dead Sea. Perhaps this very lake, known from ancient times for its fire and sulfur fumes (Genesis 19:24-28), served as the model for the name.
Of Satan, the beast, and the false prophet we read that they are cast into the lake of fire and are also tormented there “for the eons of the eons” (Revelation 19:20; 20:10).
At the judgment before the Great White Throne, we read that anyone whose name is not written in the Book of Life will be cast into the lake of fire. Twice it is then added: this is the second death (20:14; 21:8). Note well: for Satan and his two companions, the lake of fire will not be a second death. They are not dead anyway, but are actually tormented there. And moreover, it is not a second death because they have not even been dead a first time.
Conclusion: apart from three exceptions, “the lake of fire” will mean for everyone a condition of death and not of continued living. Until death, as the last enemy, will be abolished and all will be made alive (1 Cor. 15:22-28).
