Colossians 4:5 — Reclaiming the Era

5 In wisdom be walking toward those outside, reclaiming the era,

Paul is addressing “those outside”: people who are not part of the Ecclesia (1 Cor. 5:13; 1 Thess. 4:12; 1 Tim. 3:7). It is precisely toward them that believers should walk in wisdom. It is striking that Paul begins with the way one lives, not with speaking. And that order is telling.

But first, consider Paul’s second exhortation: “reclaiming the era.” The Greek kairos does not mean ongoing time (chronos), but the opportune moment, the favorable occasion. The verb ex-agorazō literally means “to buy out.” The image is drawn from the marketplace (Gr. agora). You do not let a precious opportunity slip away; you buy it up, as it were, before it passes.

The two clauses are directly connected. A wise way of life toward those outside often creates the occasions that Paul then calls believers to reclaim. Such moments cannot be forced, but they do require alertness. Whoever walks in wisdom is attentive to the opportunities God gives. A wise way of life often opens a door to speak the good word. Thus, a wise way of life does not take the place of the Word, but instead creates the occasion to speak the Word!
