1 Thessalonians 1:8 – The Report Raced Ahead of the Messengers

8  …but in every place your faith toward God has come out, so that we have no need to be speaking of anything,

Paul had just written that the word of the Lord had sounded forth from the Thessalonians, “not only in Macedonia and in Achaia.” Now he widens the circle much further: “but in every place.” Verse 9 makes clear what Paul means by this: wherever he and his coworkers went, people already knew what had happened in Thessalonica. The echo had spread astonishingly quickly.

Paul now describes that reverberation as “your faith toward God.” Literally, it does not simply say their faith in God, but a faith toward God. There is direction in that. Their faith had one direction: toward God. But the report of that faith went in every direction: “in every place.”

Its fame had by then become so widespread that Paul says: “so that we have no need to be speaking of anything.” That is all the more remarkable because Paul and his coworkers were precisely the ones who had brought the Evangel to Thessalonica. Wherever they went, they no longer had to tell what had happened in Thessalonica. The roles had, as it were, been reversed: the report had already raced ahead of them.
