1 Thessalonians 1:10 – Waiting for His Son

10 …and to be waiting for His Son out of the heavens, Whom He rouses from among the dead, Jesus, our Rescuer out of the coming indignation.

The Thessalonians’ turnaround had given their lives an entirely new direction. Paul mentions two characteristics that stand directly alongside each other. They turned to God to be slaving for the living and true God and to be waiting for His Son. How much time would pass until His coming, Paul does not say here. But one thing stood at the forefront of their expectation: His Son would come out of the heavens.

Their expectation was focused on a Person: “His Son.” Paul is not speaking here about waiting for an event, but for Someone. Already at the beginning of this chapter, Paul spoke of “the endurance of expectation of our Lord Jesus Christ” (verse 3). Here it becomes clear how concrete that expectation was: the expectation of the Lord Jesus Christ had become their expectation. Therefore, they were waiting for Him.

And they were waiting for that Son “out of the heavens.” That is where He currently is, and from there He will also come. Thus their new direction in life had two focal points: slaving for the living and true God, and waiting for His Son out of the heavens.
