1 Thessalonians 2:11 – Each One Individually

Paul did not only have an eye for the ecclesia as a whole. He reminds the Thessalonians how he dealt with “each one of you” individually. The wording is emphatic: each one. Behind the group he saw individual people, each with their own situation and need. To him they were not an audience or a crowd, but people who had become dear to him, each one individually.
Here Paul again uses a family image. In verse 7 he compared his care to a nurse cherishing her own children; here, to “a father to his own children.” The nurse portrayed warm, cherishing care. With the father, another aspect comes into view: he guides his children, addresses them, and shows them the way. And again Paul says: “his own children.” That is how personal his bond with the Thessalonians was.
That fatherly care took concrete form in “consoling and comforting you and attesting unto you.” Not everyone needs the same thing at every moment. One person needs to be consoled, another comforted, and sometimes something needs to be attested with emphasis. Paul therefore did not merely address the community as a whole, but came alongside each person individually with what was needed. As a father knows his children, so he gave attention to each one individually!
