1 Thessalonians 2:13 – The Word That Is Operating
22-09-2026 - Posted by Geert-Jan13 … the word of God, which is operating also in you who are believing.
Because it truly is God’s word, it does not remain merely information that comes to a person from the outside. It is operating. Paul had already experienced this when he came to Thessalonica: the evangel came to them “not in word only, but in power also” (1 Thess. 1:5). That power did not lie in the eloquence of the messengers, but in the word they brought.
Paul uses energeō here: to operate, to be operating. Our word “energy” is derived from it. The subject is God’s word: the Word operates. The Thessalonians therefore did not need to make it operate through their own effort. Earlier Paul had already spoken of “your work of faith” (1 Thess. 1:3). The operation originates in God’s word itself.
And that Word operates “in you who are believing.” Faith possesses no power in itself. Think of an electrical cable: the cable is not the source of the energy, but it is connected to it, and therefore the energy operates through it. So too, faith is entirely directed toward what God speaks. It says amen to it and derives everything from Him who makes His word true. That is why God reckons faith for righteousness. Faith is not the power source, but the channel through which God’s powerful Word operates!
