1 Thessalonians 2:16 – The Indignation Reaches Them to a Consummation

16 …Yet the indignation outstrips to them to a consummation.

When people read “the indignation,” they usually immediately think of God’s indignation. But that is not what it says. Paul simply writes: “the indignation.” And the immediate context points in a different direction. What had so enraged his fellow countrymen? Paul states it himself: they prevented him from speaking to the nations “that they may be saved.” The salvation going to the nations provoked opposition.

Moses had already foretold precisely that reaction. Through an unintelligent nation, God said, He would “be vexing you” (Rom. 10:19). And in the next chapter Paul states the other side of this: through Israel’s offense, salvation came to the nations “to provoke them to jealousy” (Rom. 11:11). Jealousy and indignation belong to the same reaction. Paul’s ministry among the nations was therefore itself the stimulus by which that reaction was aroused.

This also gives “to a consummation” a natural place. Paul writes eis telos—not “to the end”; the article is absent. He is not referring here to a specific final judgment. The thought may simply be that this indignation continues to reach Israel as long as this ministry runs its course: Paul speaks to the nations, they are saved, and Israel is thereby provoked to jealousy and indignation. The salvation of the nations aroused Israel’s indignation—and in that very thing, what had been announced beforehand was unfolding!
