1 Thessalonians 3:8 – Standing Firm in the Lord

8 for now we are living if ever you are standing firm in the Lord.

With “for,” Paul explains just how much the encouragement mentioned in the previous verse meant to him: “now we are living.” He could hardly have put it more strongly. His own distress and affliction had not disappeared, but the good news about the Thessalonians revived his spirits. Their faith meant so much to him that their perseverance gave him a renewed will to live.

“If ever you are standing firm,” he adds. That if ever need not express doubt, as though Paul were still uncertain after Timothy’s report. It states the condition: when they stand, Paul comes alive. And that very standing forms a beautiful contrast with verse 3. There, the afflictions threatened to shake them. Now it turns out: they are standing!

But stēkō says even more: they stand firm. This becomes evident precisely when pressure is applied and everything is aimed at moving someone from their position. Their firm standing had been proven under affliction. They did not merely stand; under pressure, they remained in place. That was precisely what demonstrated their steadfastness. And where were they standing firm? “In the Lord.” It was not their own strength that kept them standing; their firm position was in Him. That was what gave Paul new life: amid all the turmoil around them, they continued standing firm in the Lord.
