Whoever Believes Shall Surely Not Die Forever?
Jesus said to her: I am the Resurrection and the Life; whoever believes in Me shall live, even if he has died, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall not die for eternity; do you believe this?
John 11:25, 26 NBG51
Here it is not said that the one who has died is alive, (as Lazarus is in this account), but that he “shall live,” namely, in the resurrection, for that is the subject about which Jesus is speaking here.
And further, Jesus says to Martha that whoever lives and believes in Him shall not die “unto the eon” — literally translated. That means that whoever believes receives “eonian life” (> age-lasting life). Whoever believes will experience the coming eon and will not die in it. That is the guarantee Jesus gives here. Jesus does not promise that whoever believes will not die from now on, but that he will not die in “the eon.”
Martha certainly did die, but in “the eon,” namely, the coming one, she will live and not die.
