Colossians 3:16 — Teaching Through Song

10-07-2026 - Posted by Geert-Jan

16 Let the word of Christ be making its home in you richly, in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing yourselves; in psalms, in hymns, in spiritual songs, singing, with grace in your hearts to God.

Many translations speak here of “correcting” or “admonishing.” But the Greek noutheteō is broader: it denotes placing something in the mind, drawing someone’s attention to something. Hence: “calling one another’s attention.” This is how the word of Christ dwells richly among the saints: they teach one another and call one another’s attention.

We should not overlook the fact that Paul connects this directly with singing. Singing is not merely an expression of experience and emotion. No, through songs, believers teach one another. Singing and music do not serve as a change of pace from teaching; they are themselves a form of teaching. A song communicates the content of faith.

It is precisely here that the distinctive power of teaching through song lies. Words set to music easily become fixed in our memory. We may forget a talk that very same day, while a song can continue to echo in our minds for years. That is precisely why what we sing matters. The primary question is not whether a song sounds beautiful or moves us emotionally. The decisive question is: What does it teach? What does it call our attention to? Does it truly convey the word of Christ?
