Is The Belief That The Dead Are Dead Not Comfortless?

Death is like a sleep from which one will awaken. When Paul writes to the grieving about believers who have fallen asleep, he tells them that one day (at the sounding of the trumpet) they will rise and, together with the living who remain, will go to meet the Lord in the air. “Comfort one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:18; SV). He therefore does not give the comfort that they are already with the Lord, but that at a later moment, together with many others, they will go to the Lord. Not one by one, but all at once.
