Did Enoch Never Die?

By faith Enoch was taken away (lit. transferred) so that he did not see death (SV: in order that he would not see death), and he was not found anymore, for God had taken him away (lit. transferred).
Hebrews 11:5

Enoch was transferred (in Greek the same word as in Acts 7:16: “brought over”) in order that he would not see death. When it says that Enoch was transferred so that he would not see death, this cannot be about a natural death from old age, for he was nowhere near that yet (for example, he had not nearly reached half the age that his son would reach). So Enoch was evidently transferred to preserve him from a violent death. The ungodly people against whom Enoch prophesied (see Jude 14,15) sought to kill him, and with that in view God transferred or moved him. So the point is not that Enoch would never see death, but that God spared him from an early, violent death. Enoch disappeared. Where to, we do not know. We do know that he too eventually died. After all, in Hebrews 11:13 it is said: “in that faith THESE ALL died.” So also Enoch. It is excluded that Enoch ascended to heaven, for “NO ONE has ascended into heaven, except He Who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man” (John 3:13).
