Do the Final Chapters of the Bible Show Universal Reconciliation?
John assures us in the book of Revelation that God will make all things new (Revelation 21:5).
Yet John’s field of vision does not reach as far as Paul’s in 1 Corinthians 15. In the final chapters of Revelation, John speaks of “the throne of the Lamb” and of reigning for the eons of the eons (22:5). Paul, however, shows that Christ’s reign has an “until” (15:25). In Revelation 21 and 22 there is still mention of (the second) death (21:8). Paul, however, says that death, as the last enemy, will be nullified (15:26).
That Revelation 21 and 22 do not describe the ultimate glory is also evident from the fact that the nations still need healing. “The eons of the eons” move from glory to glory. John shows that. Ultimately, God will become “All in all.” Only Paul shows that last truth. Not only that this will happen, but also when.
