Where Is “the Lake of Fire”?

The expression “the lake of fire” occurs 5 times in Scripture, every time in the book of Revelation. The word for “lake” is exactly the same as the one also used for “the lake of Gennesaret” (Luke 5:1). A lake is a body of water surrounded by land. Notice the definite article: THE lake of fire (and sulfur).

From Scripture, only one lake qualifies for this. In the once fruitful region of Sodom and Gomorrah, God rained fire and sulfur, so that the inhabitants died a sudden fiery death (Gen. 19:24–28). This happened in the area of what is called, significantly, the Dead Sea. It is the lowest point on earth, more than 400 meters below sea level, where to this day every form of life is absent. During the thousand years this lake will come to life (Ezek. 47), but both before the thousand years (Rev. 19:20) and after the thousand years (Rev. 20:9, 10), fire and sulfur will again come here from heaven.
