Priest Forever?
13-12-2003 - Posted by Geert-JanA new text has been added to the section “examined”: Hebrews 6:20. (The section ‘examined’ no longer exists – 2026) The usual translations report that Jesus has passed through the veil and since then is Priest… forever. That is strange. In the new creation, after all, according to Scripture there will explicitly be no temple anymore. And apparently no priestly service either. For God will then dwell among mankind without mediation (compare Revelation 21:3, 22). How then “High Priest forever”?
The solution to this peculiarity lies in the fact that in the Greek text of Hebrews 6:20 it says “eis ton aioona,” which does not mean “forever,” but “for the eon.” This concerns “the coming eon” on this earth. An earth that, to be sure, has been “lifted up” into ideal conditions (under the reign of the King-Priest), but which, even then, will not yet be in the ultimate perfection.
