Mystery or Light in the Darkness?

In response to my latest article, in which I pointed out that God created Satan, I received quite a few reactions. Reactions of very different kinds, I must say. Some were tremendously glad to learn that the Bible gives a clear answer to the question of the origin of evil: that God truly is GOD and also assigns evil a role in His all-encompassing Plan. Not as an end in itself, but as a necessary setting and backdrop against which to display His goodness. Others, however, were angry and indignant because, in their eyes, I am trying to explain away a mystery. “André Piet must think he has God all figured out!”

No, André Piet does not think that. When we speak of GOD, we are speaking of Someone who is ABSOLUTELY incomprehensible. My father often said: if creation itself is already so vast and incomprehensible, how vast and incomprehensible must the Creator Himself be?! And that is exactly right. But please, let us take this God at His Word. Why speak of a mystery when God Himself sheds light where things are dark to us? If God Himself solemnly declares that He is the Creator of light and darkness, and of good and evil (Isaiah 45:7), who are we to claim that nothing certain can be said about this? That may appear humble, but it is presumptuous. I do not have to explain the fact that God once created Satan. I simply establish that He did – with all the harmful consequences that followed. But was that a mistake on God’s part? Or did God know exactly what He was doing? I am deeply convinced of the latter. God acted with foreknowledge. From the beginning, He proclaimed the outcome (Isaiah 46:10). And therefore this remains firm as a rock:

with God, NOTHING ever goes wrong!
