The Days of Genesis 1

Yesterday I gave a presentation in Katwijk about the days in Genesis 1. Two matters were central to it.

1. The six days in which God made the heavens and the earth were days of restoration. The world that God created “in the beginning” had, for an unspecified reason, completely perished through water. “Tohu wa-bohu” (waste and vacant) is what that is called, quite ominously, in Hebrew. Subsequently, God made this world in six days – read: restored it.
2. Genesis 1 does not merely tell the origin history of the world and its inhabitants; not least, it is also the table of contents of the entire Bible! The six days are a depiction of the work that God does with respect to humanity, from the very beginning until, eventually, in this world, the seventh day – the world Sabbath – will dawn. All the days refer chronologically to the Plan that God carries out in phases. When studying the first Bible chapter, a magnificent panorama unfolds before our eyes. The origin history of our world also proves to be a blueprint of salvation history. Only God could conceive such a thing.
