Zionism and the Holocaust

Over the past few months, I have spent quite some time studying Orthodox Jewish opposition to Zionism. Through my study of biblical prophecy, I had long been aware of the dramatic end awaiting the present Jewish state. But what strikes me so profoundly is that Orthodox Judaism has traditionally been aware of this as well. I am truly amazed by the profound connections being made on various websites representing this perspective.

Today I read an article by a rabbi about the role of Zionism in the Holocaust. I could hardly believe my eyes! This rabbi argues that Zionism is a violation of a solemn oath. According to him, it has brought the greatest catastrophes upon the Jewish people in two thousand years.

The Talmud explains (Tractate Kesubos 111a) that we are bound by three oaths. We were not to ascend to the Holy Land as a group using force. We were not to rebel against the governments of the countries in which we live. And the coming of the Messiah was not to be delayed by our sins.

When the secular Zionist movement began to gain serious momentum toward the end of the 19th century, various leaders, particularly from the Hasidic community, warned of the judgment of God that would come upon it. One of the greatest among them, the Satmar Rebbe, Joel Teitelbaum, said after WWII: We lost more than six million of our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, in a horrific way. They had to suffer the punishment for Zionist foolishness. The Holocaust, he cried, was a direct result of Zionism, a punishment from G-d.
